The rain was no match for the Los Angeles based indie band Pollyn who played to a packed crowd of late night party goers in Miami, FL this past Thursday. After checking out the scene at Art Basel, Miami’s largest gathering of galleries and art from around the world, guests took to the streets for an all-night gathering of good music and libations. This particular after party took place at the former art-space-turned-club/lounge; Mamushka’s near Miami’s Midtown Design District. It was nothing short of a wild night. While Pollyn got the crowd to their feet with hits like “How Small We Are” and “Gave it Up” on another stage was the South African born DJ and singer, Jonti who sang and played his classic little beat symphonies to polish off the night. Shout out to Stones Throw Records for helping to sponsor the event.

Jonti
———-
“When I think of how to write about Jonti’s music, I don’t feel like writing at all. I feel like drawing a picture, with watercolors and maybe crayon – colorful, abstract, youthfully curious and open to interpretation. Maybe then I’d staple, glue or nail some found objects to it, recontextualizing their intended purpose into something strange and beautiful.”
- Jeremy Sole (Radio Host, KCRW)

Pollyn
———-
Pollyn is hard to place into a specific genre. Born out of their mutual love for the sample-heavy 90’s electronic scene, Pollyn makes atmospheric music influenced by down-tempo, new wave, funk, world and traditional pop.

Originally sampling old records to make their music, Pollyn has matured throughout the years incorporating live percussion, synthesizers, and vintage drum machines to their signature sound.

STORY BY: PARKER BRUCE

Nozinja and Nurse Matlala of South Africa’s Shangann Electro scene took Pollyn’s catchy, all-about-the-bassline track “How Small We Are” and made it even more thrilling by adding new vocals and doubling its length. Pollyn’s Adam Jay Weissman explains, “The idea was to give [Nozinja and Nurse Matlala] the lyrics and have them translate them to create their own version of the song. They had free reign to do their thing. The track has a new brevity to it, several beats teetering insistently on as Nurse pontificates sagely over it all. In this video, filmed in Soweto, South Africa, Nurse Matlala presides with glory, rocking CD earrings and a pink top. The “How Small We Are” EP is available for free on Pollyn’s Bandcamp.
